Topic: Police Use of Deadly Force & Defunding the Police

As you are all aware, the relationship between police and communities of color has come to the forefront of discussions about policing in the United States. Calls for police reform are increasing and communities seek justice for the harms that have occurred. Although, much of the public has opinions on this issue, most have not taken a college level policing course or read research related to the topic. Given this, it is up to you to help inform them and help correct some of the misinformation (or lack of information) in this area.

For this problem, you should write two page summary of the issues surrounding police use of deadly force over the last 5-10 years. What are the primary issues? How serious is the problem? How does this impact the police-community relationship? Then, you should write two page summary on the defunding the police movement (a suggested strategy to address these concerns). What is defunding all about? How does it differ from what is currently being done and why do its supporters think it will improve things? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the defunding argument?

Make sure you find multiple sources to support your answers. Don't forget to check where the information is coming from and the quality of the source. There is a lot of biased information out there on this topic and you need to be careful about the sources you choose. Peer-reviewed research studies are the best sources but you may also find books, government sources, and newspapers (like the Washington Post, New York Times, etc.) helpful. You should avoid the use of online and opinion-based sources that are not based on research or professional standards of journalism.
