While the ancients argued that politics could not be accurately understood in separation from the life of the mind, which they understood to have the highest rank, Machiavelli says that this is a fool's idea. Since people are not good, and existing among them requires learning how not to be good, politics must be understood in its own light, with regard to its own goals, such as security and aggrandizement.
