Assignment: "Diplomacy"

  1. How does the concept of "bushido" apply to the samurai? I posted a thread about this in the forum that you can consult for help. The introductory lecture will also be of use.
  2. Why does the samurai resist negative depiction? Use the story to make your point.
  3. Are there any supernatural elements in the story? If so, what role do they play? Choose one thing.
  4. Consider the way(s) "karma" applies to the condemned man, including the potential supernatural after-effects of executing a possibly innocent man. Choose one way it may apply and explain.
  5. Note the following passage from the story:

"Oh, the reason is simple enough," declared the samurai, divining the unspoken doubt. "Only the very last intention of the fellow could have been dangerous; and when I challenged him to give me the sign, I diverted his mind from the desire of revenge. He died with the set purpose of biting the stepping-stone; and that purpose he was able to accomplish, but nothing else. All the rest he must have forgotten... So you need not feel any further anxiety about the matter."
