Case: We've given you a few basic guidelines to follow for your op-ed, but, as you may have already noticed, there are lots of possible ways to fulfill them. This assignment asks you to find a model essay that you can draw upon as you're writing your own. First, find an essay that offers an opinion or proposal about a science or technology topic in a way that is accessible and relevant to a broad, non-technical audience. Good places to look include popular science and technology journals, and possibly articles within trade journals that consider the broader reach of a given technology or industry. The essay does not have to be on the same topic as the one you're writing about; for this assignment, you're interested in questions of construction more than the argument itself.
Once you have your essay picked out, cite it at the top of the page. Then, in a few short paragraphs, address the elements below:

1) Offer a one-sentence paraphrase of the argument (e. g., we should be concerned that ____; this technology is worth our attention because _____; technology or method x can solve a problem better than y; etc.). How far into the essay do you have to read before you find a clear statement of the author's proposal or position (hint: look in the first and last couple of paragraphs)?

2) Think about the role that this specific journal plays in shaping how the argument is presented. Apart from questions of formatting, how do you see factors like the journal's audience and submission guidelines informing the writing?

3) How does the author handle technical terms and concepts? How does s/he address both technical and non-technical audiences?

4) How does the author use outside sources? Do you see a lot of direct quotation, for example, or maybe more cited references to factual information? Overall, what's the approximate balance between the time spent presenting the author's proposal or position and the time spent talking about other people's research or findings?

5) How does the author create interest in this topic? What kind of hooks or appeals does s/he use (hint: look at the first few sentences)? What's the role of visuals in this essay, if any?

6) Finally, choose two strategies from this essay that you haven't discussed yet that can help strengthen your essay.
