This first essay must be a 500-750 word essay concentrating on the short fiction we have read this week. It is due at the end of Week 2. Note that this must be a close reading essay, and should use as evidence merely passages from the story or stories that you discuss. DON'T BRING IN ANY OUTSIDE SOURCES. Please remember that the essay must be in MLA essay format and must have the student/teacher cover letter as the first page.
Thinking about Setting- Occasionally setting is just a backdrop as well as sometimes it plays a greater role in a story. Choose one story in which you trust that setting plays an important role and clarify how.
Responding to Tone- Deliberate tone in one of the short stories for the unit. How does it play into your insight of the story? What sort of a result does it have overall?
Reading Symbolism- Numerous of the stories we read make use of symbolism to communicate themes of the story. In one story select one symbol or two closely related symbols as well as clarify in your essay the meaning of that symbol/symbols within the story.
Relationships among characters- Interactions among characters drive the plots of some of the stories that we've read. Choose one story as well as figure out which characters in that story appear to be the focus. What is their relationship as well as how does it shape what goes on?
