Question: This week the concept of chain of command (scalar chain) was discussed. Correctional facilities have been described as para- military organizations. What does this mean and how does that relate to the chain of command structure. Do you think that this form of organizational structure is effective or is it outdated? If outdated, please provide an alternative paradigm. Finally, how does the chain of command structure affect the concept of leadership which we have been discussing since week two? Please don't guess at para-military. If you don't know what it means, do the needed research because it really is an important concept to understand and it does create a distinction between corrections and other kinds of public and private enterprise. Sometimes we miss the obvious. In our search for definition and analysis we seem to have forgotten an important element in prisons...Inmates. As you answer my initial question, some of you may want to take a shot at that. You won't find it in textbook definitions but you may find it in peer review journals. You don't have to take the time to do that search since it would be time-consuming. But you can certainly speculate on this aspect of the issue.
