Exam Content
Throughout the course, we have considered whether the media creates culture or if the culture creates its own media. We looked at electronic and digital media, and we have seen how they have either followed what was happening in society or influenced what was happening in society. This week, we will look at the news media, the media form that has the most influence on us since it tells us what is happening in society.
As we close out the class, consider news media available as traditional media and social media. Social media platforms and other technology have revolutionized how we communicate with one another and how news is delivered. Unfortunately, social media platforms, and even some news outlets, contain misinformation.
Scenario
Imagine you are part of a community group trying to replace a local city council member. The council member is spreading misinformation about your group through the local media. This false information is causing distress among your members, and they are looking for solutions.
Your team knows you're studying mass media and asks for your help. They want to understand the roles of traditional and social media in American news reporting, especially regarding the responsibility to share accurate information.
Assessment Deliverable
Write a 350- to 525-word email to the group addressing the following questions based on your knowledge and research:
- What role do traditional news media (radio, television, and print) play in delivering news to our society? Think about the First Amendment and freedom of the press.
- How does social media contribute to news delivery in society? Remember the presence of traditional news media on social media platforms and consider citizen journalists as well.
- What responsibilities do news media have to provide accurate information to the public? Think about the social responsibility theory, as well as the ethical standards outlined by the Society of Professional Journalists.
- Should social media platforms be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of user-shared content? Explain. Consider Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
