Discussion Topic
Even though most (if not all) moral issues are explainable in terms of a conflict between some combination of consequences and duties, they are not explainable just in terms of those moral standards. For the discussion, please consider how any two ethical theories (at least one of which is neither utilitarianism nor Kantian ethics) characterize two opposing perspectives on a contemporary moral issue: How does one ethical theory inform one perspective? How does another ethical theory inform an opposing perspective? Which perspective is correct and why?
As with Discussions 1 and 2, appropriate contemporary moral issues include, but are not limited to, the legal status of abortion, the legal status of guns, the teaching of sexuality and gender studies in schools, and government censorship of social media. The point is to describe how moral conflict can be described in terms of two ethical theories (one of which is neither utilitarianism nor Kantian ethics). Unlike the previous discussion posts, you must explain why one perspective is correct. Please observe the following parameters in your discussion post:
. Fully describe the specific issue you are discussing, including the moral question that both perspectives are seeking to answer;
. Discuss two oppositional perspectives on a single issue characterized by two different ethical theories (one of which is neither utilitarianism nor Kantian ethics); and
. Avoid using the prefixes pro-and anti- and instead describe the answers to the moral question that both sides actually give.
Then, please respond to at least one other post offering constructive criticism considering, for example, whether the post sufficiently described the moral issue in question, fully defined the ethical theories characterizing the perspectives, fully explained how the ethical theories characterize two oppositional perspectives on the same issue, and fully explained why one perspective is the correct one.
