Critical Thinking Activity with Group Interaction and Response - Human Geography
Music and a Geographic Sense of Place
Question: Please think about this question and respond, then thoughtfully comment on at least two other groups' projects: Using Screaming at the Moptops as your example (or providing your own) how does music contribute to a geographic sense of place or how does a geographic sense of place contribute to music?
Background
Students will have read Screaming at the Moptops, which is an article about The Beatles and Beatles Tribute Bands. The article points out ways in which the original Beatles used local places in their music as well as ways their music has transformed Liverpool. Then it discusses the development of Tribute Bands such as The Moptops who continue the presence of the Beatles in Liverpool and the controversy surrounding the preservation of authentic versus the development of tourist landscapes.
Objectives: Students will be able to more fully explore the concept of place, extending our discussion of two previous articles, Space or Place and Sacred Spaces and Tourist Places. Furthermore, they will be able to apply some of the similar conditions they find in Screaming at the Moptops and be able to make their own meaningful connection between music and a geographic sense of place.
Goals: Students will explore the relationship between music and a geographic sense of place by combining images and a selection of music in a way that demonstrates that the images are reflective of the music. Furthermore students will be able to evaluate in what ways they were able to make the connection between a geographic sense of place and the music they enjoy as well as drawing upon three relevant articles to support their analysis.
Assignment
According to our textbook, these programs allow for creating and sharing video, audio, and images. I assume the easiest medium would be through Power Point. I would like to develop a creative project where students will be asked to make a connection between the music they enjoy and place and/or landscape. They can choose a piece of music that references a place as the Beatles did (Penny Lane, and the river Merzy, for example) and find images that reflect these places. They can select a piece of music from a specific region of the world or of the US and choose images that reflect its place of origin. Or, they can choose a piece of music and find images of place or landscape the music reminds them of. Once they have chosen the music and the images and linked them together, they need to upload them onto Blackboard with an explanation of why they chose the images they did and how these images relate to the music using three specified articles.
Instructions
[I will need to provide significant instruction for the software program the students are to use]. Select a piece of music you enjoy to which you can relate geographic images of place. Perhaps the artist is singing about a specific place, the music comes from a certain region of the world, or the music reminds you of certain feelings you get when you look at images of landscapes. Please be respectful of the class in the music and images you choose to share. Create a program of not more than one minute where you are linking the music and the images of place and upload it into the class discussion board. Then, within your post, provide an explanation of why you chose the images you did and relate your project to some combination of the three articles we have read: Space or Place, Sacred Spaces and Tourist Places, and/or Screaming at the Moptops.
You are also to select the projects of two other students, review them, and thoughtfully comment on them according to the same criteria by which your own project is being evaluated. Students will be provided with a rubric.
Assessment: These projects will be very subjective in content, therefore I will evaluate them based on the clarity and thoroughness of their explanations, how well the combination of images and music express the student's ideas, and how clearly the students are able to draw connections to the relevant articles. Students individually will also receive an additional 10 points for thoughtfully commenting on the projects of two other students.
