Part one
Based on the intro video and websites you read, please choose one of the following for your response. As always, you can ask and answer your own question, too.
1. How does Marine Ecosystems-Based Management (including Marine Spatial Planning and Regional Ocean Planning) fall under the definitions of "strong sustainability" that we have been studying this semester? Discuss 1 or 2 of the same tenets, principles, ideas, or understanding.
2. Both strong "natural" science and social science (beyond economics) is needed for EBM and Ocean Planning. How do you see scholars and activists who focus on "just sustainability" playing a role in Ocean Planning work?
3. Take a look and see if you other countries besides the United States are developing Marine EBM, Marine Spatial Planning, or Ocean Planning projects. Discuss what you find.
Part two
Review the following websites about the California Current Integrated Ecosystem Assessment:
2. From the last page on Ecosystems Components (d), what is an "Ecosystem Component"? Click on one human-related and one animal/plant/oceanography/climate-related categories in any of the 4 areas of Ecosystem Components. How is each of them a critical component for planning for the marine social-ecological system?
