1. Muir's "Merlin" employs a good deal of alliteration. What effect does the alliteration have? How does it work with the poem's imagery?
2. Look at the second and third stanzas of Wilbur's "Merlin Enthralled." How is the natural world portrayed here?
3. Look at the second-last line of Gunn's poem: "Rook, bee, you are the whole and not a part." According to Professor Shelley King, this line indicates that Merlin's "perspective has changed - that bee and rook instead of being signs of other things ... are simply themselves, not part of Merlin's grand designs." What do you think? How does this line fit into the final stanza and into the poem as a whole?
