Assignment:

Pierre Bourdieu tries (in a not very straight forward manner) to explain the relationship between cultural taste and social class. He describes one's taste as corresponding to their level of education. Certain cultural activities require training as well as the resources that would permit them to engage in those activities. Because cultural activities become markers of class, culture can be used as a gate keeping mechanism to let some people in and keep some people out. What this means is that people who aspire to upward social mobility are often forced to adopt the cultural markers (and values) of the upper classes if they are going to make it through those social gates. The questions this raises for our course are these:

1. How does reality-based television reinforce notions of "high" (sophisticated) and "low" (vulgar) culture? How does it teach what is supposedly "good" and "bad" taste? Who does this benefit?

2. Who does it keep in a position of authority? Who does it strip of cultural power (assuming the person adopts the value system)?

3. In other words, how is reality TV complicit in reproducing class stratification?
