Question: An organelle is a tiny, membrane-enclosed component in a cell that serves a particular purpose. The organelle is the parts of a cell that have unique duties to perform. The nucleus, a structure that houses the cell's chromosomes and is the site of RNA synthesis, is an example of an organelle. The nucleus is the control center of the cell and stores the DNA. Other examples are lysosomes, sac-like receptacles containing enzymes that break down and aid in the recycling of molecules in the cell. Mitochondria is a structure that produces energy for the cell and is responsible for producing steroids and governing cell death. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) is where lipids are produced and detoxifies and has no ribosomes, whereas the rough endoplasmic reticulum involves protein production and ribosomes. The Golgi apparatus helps with protein modification and export. The peroxisome helps with lipid destruction and contains oxidative enzymes. Lysosomes are responsible for protein destruction.
