Discussion Post: Unpacking Life Values
For this discussion, I want you to investigate your own life and consider the things you hold to be true about the world; what do you value? More importantly, I want to know why you value it. I am not simply talking about whether you value your parents, your boyfriend or girlfriend, your car, your pets, your video game system, or that one keepsake you got from a friend all those years ago. I'm talking about large worldly values. Do you value parenthood as a concept? Do you value relationships; traditional or otherwise? Do you value materialism or capitalism? Do you value education? Religion? Hard work? Competition?
I want you to really consider something global (in the sense that it encompasses much of your life); and that shapes decisions you make in your life. Then unpack that value and consider why it is you value it so much. Hint: Consider some "isms" you agree with; altruism, collectivism, capitalism, nihilism, egalitarianism, aestheticism, etc. You can also consider your culture and how certain cultures may favor things like privacy, hard-work, discipline, focus on physical or mental health, etc.
Write about 3 "larger life values" that you hold. Does it connect to other things you value? How does it explain the decisions you make in your life? Do other people value things that may conflict with this value? In what ways?
