INSTRUCTIONS
Students will conduct a 1200-word critical analysis essay on a set topic from specific material covered from across the term.
Students should select ONE of the questions below:
1. How does hegemony affect global media flows, and are there alternatives to Western media dominance? Choose a country and analyse what media products flows in and out of the country - which flows are most dominant? Is their own media most dominant, is American media most dominant, etc?
2. Choose a visual media genre (such as adventure, drama, action, romance, horror, sci-fi/fantasy, etc), and analyse how they employ techniques such as the gaze/symbols/codes when producing meaning?
3. What is the visual media's role in the representation of different marginalised groups, e.g. women, migrants, people with non-White or non-European heritage, LGBTQIA+ people? Choose two popular films (or television series) to critically analyse their representation of a particular minority group.
4. How do theories of masculinity and femininity inform our analysis of visual media? You can discuss in relation to film, television, advertising, music videos, videogames, and/or pornography.
5. Analyse the visual culture of social media. Does it provide opportunities for social change? Does the commercial aspect of social media limit the internet's ability to create social change? What other limits might there be?
