1). Why should the woman in the fairy tale try to rebuff the prospective bridegroom if she eventually marries him and the two live happily ever after? In an Old Icelandic poem, Frey, a god, sends his servant to woo Gerd, a giant's daughter. The gods and the giants are in a state of constant hot war. She rejects the offer. The servant tries to mollify her with gifts, but she remains adamant. Then he tells her what punishment will be visited on her if she declines the offer. At the end of his speech, she suddenly says: "Oh, I did not realize how much I am in love with Frey." She agrees to marry him but demands that he wait nine nights before they meet. How does (if at all) Gerd fit into our "classification" of folklore heroines?
