Case Study: The poem "Bilingual/Bilingüe" by Espaillat, exposes the tension with languages, between a daughter and a father, where the later disapproves the use of Spanglish. The poet has explored this topic in other texts like "An Imaginary Dialogue", where the poetic voice inquires to her father his disappointment toward mixing languages (see article by Kang and Torres Saillant). The character Don Homero came from a Spanish literary tradition. He thinks that mixing languages would create confusion, and people will not be able to master any of them. Besides, they will lose their capacity to be exposed to the language of Miguel de Cervantes, Rubén Dario, Jorge Luis Borges, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Pedro Mir. On the other hand, in the English tradition, they will not be able to know Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. In other words, they will not be able to read neither the Spanish nor English canon. Espaillat, herself, is a translator of Frost's poetry among other English and Spanish poets. (Kang and Torres Saillant 186).
