Gender and Slavery
An important theme in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845) is gender and slavery. Throughout the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845), Douglass gives constant attention to his desire to not only prove that he is human but also to prove that he is a "man." Write an analysis of this theme, based on the following questions:
Question 1 : According to Frederick Douglass, what does it mean to be a "man"? In other words, what assumptions about gender (expected cultural behaviors that make a person masculine or feminine) are revealed by a close reading of the Narrative?
Question 2 : How does Douglass use assumptions about gender to make his case against slavery?
