Introduction to Sociology
Critical Analysis
The purpose of this assignment requires each student to answer one of the following research questions through:
Question 1. Summarizing and critiquing an academic sociological journal article.
Question 2. Discussing sociological concepts, theories, and social trends.
Research Questions: Students must select one of the following research questions:
Question 1. Deviance and Crime (Chapter 5)
Does getting tougher on criminal behavior deter crime and result in safer communities? (Explain why or why not and identify the sociological implications)
Question 2. Social Stratification (Chapter 6)
Considering that Canada is a relatively wealthy country, are people poor because they make bad choices, or are there other social factors that contribute to poverty?
Question 3. Race and Ethnicity (Chapter 7)
What are the challenges immigrants face when arriving in Canada? (What are the sociological implications for increasing levels of immigration?)
Question 4. Sexualities and Genders (Chapter 8)
How does discrimination based on sex, gender and gender identification remain a significant social problem in Canada? (Focus on one or more issue)
Question 5. Families (Chapter 9)
What effect does the growing diversity of Canadian family forms (e.g. same-sex marriage, single-parent families, common-law families, polygamy, etc.) have on the functionality of this institution? For example, do alternative family forms succeed at establishing and promoting family stability?
Question 6. Health and Medicine (Chapter 12)
There are a number of healthcare models around the world. For example, the American capitalist model and the European socialist models each reflect different models of healthcare, and each may be functional at some level. What elements of these or other models might best serve Canada's current and future healthcare needs?
