On a global scale, however, DHL is the market leader in international express delivery service. DHL has gradually expanded throughout the world since the early 1970s. Until the early 2000s, however, DHL was strong in Europe and Asia, but did not have a strong presence in the United States. As interactions between companies in Asia, Europe, and the United States increased, it became clear to DHL that it must develop its network in the United States.
