Industrial societies have two outstanding features: they do not need the "traditional" family required by agricultural societies for production, and they are capable of producing immense riches that can facilitate myriad lifestyles. Agricultural families needed to reproduce themselves and so have children to remove the physical load from their aging parents and ultimately to inherit the land. In industrial societies there is no need at the level of individuals or couples to reproduce, although states may consider themselves obligated to make an effort to do so.
