Assignment:

Thoughts on A research problem I believe chemists should be working more on is, "How does brain chemistry affect recovery from addiction?". I believe, through personal observation, that many people are connected to someone suffering from addiction or suffer from it themselves at some point in their life. This is a pressing topic and something I think is critical for chemists to continue to discover more about because of the wide array of addictions and the consequences it has for our society. Addiction can and will completely consume a person and affect the addict's entire family through the short term and long term. Research shows that about 15% of the U.S. population is believed to be predisposed to develop an addiction because of their genetic history. This is an issue that needs to be addressed and maintained before it even develops. People need to be aware of how their body will react to anything addictive and how hard it will be for them to stop if they continue to use whatever it is that is creating an addiction. The abuse of something addictive can change the chemistry of the brain and completely consume the addict's everyday decisions and way of life. Continuing to pour out findings and information about addiction helps to shift the public's perception about the problem stemming from a moral failing or character flaw. This understanding has also helped shift disciplinary action from law enforcement punishment to offering treatment.
