Big data and visualization
Practical project
Learning Outcome 1: Investigate various big data and visualization software, examine their features, and evaluate application in business.
Learning Outcome 2: Apply a variety of tools/software for data visualization and storytelling.
Assessment Description: In this assessment, students will work in groups to submit an assessment which aims at students performing advanced data visualization and storytelling techniques on a chosen data set and writing a report based on the topics covered in the previous week's workshops.
The following items should specifically be addressed in the report:
Describe your dataset, what are the attributes in this dataset, what is the reason that you chose this dataset and what is the goal that you are seeking in this data visualization effort (consider the concept of context in data visualization which was discussed in the lectures)
Create graphs that can describe the relationship between the attributes of the dataset
Find some patterns or characteristics of the attributes or some relationships between different attributes of the data.
Based on the above activities, design appropriate dashboards and story points in Tableau which you can use to narrate your story about your dataset
In the final section of your report, in about 500 words, tell the story of your dataset based on your Tableau story points.
OBJECTIVES
This task asks you to work in group (3-4 students) and perform advanced data visualization and storytelling techniques on your chosen data set and write a group report based on the following contents:
Choose a dataset from the links available on the document "Instructions how to use Tableau Public" in Moodle/Session 1/Activities or SEE
BELOW
Introduce topic you chosen and describe your dataset with respect to this dataset, what are the attributes in this dataset, what is the reason that you chose this dataset and what is the goal that you are seeking in this data visualization effort. State at least three objectives that you want to address using this dataset (consider the concept of context in data visualization which was discussed in the lectures).
Create graphs that can describe the relationship between the attributes of the dataset. Explain why this should make sense in terms of your chose topic.
Find some patterns or characteristics of the attributes or some relationships between different attributes of the data
Based on the above activities, design appropriate dashboards and story points in Tableau which you can use to narrate your story
about your dataset.
In the final section of your report, tell the story of your dataset based on your Tableau story points.
STRUCTURE OF YOUR REPORT
Cover page: Present a project topic, list your group members with full name and ID, indicate who completed which section e.g. John Lee completed Section 1 & 3, Lan Tran completed Section 2, etc.,,)
1. Introduction: This section should cover Content 2 above
2. Results from Tableau: This section should cover Contents 3, 4 & 5 above. You can have sub-headings for different sub-sections.
3. Tableau data storytelling: This section should cover Content 6 above
4. Conclusion: Brief conclusions about dataset and limitations of your report that you have not yet addressed and would like to recommend to futher studies.
References: At least 3 references cited in your work and were listed in the references section, USING THE HARVARD REFERENCING STYLE. Note that don't list any references if you don't cite them in text.
