Introduction to Linux
Task 1 - Logging on to a Linux System
This activity assumes that you have never used Unix/Linux system before. You will familiarize with the login process and both the graphical and terminal windows that are available to you once you log on to the system. In the first instance, we will be using LinuxMint running on VirtualBox.
1. Start up your VirtualBox then run LinuxMint. From theLinuxMint login screen, enter you're the root login account at the login dialog prompt. Were you prompted for a password?
2. Enter a password for the root account. Did the password appear on the screen? Were you able to successfully log on to the system?
3. Enter your login account and password (that you have already createdduring installing and setting up your LinuxMint).
4. At the desktop of your Linux computer, observe the icons, menus, and programs that are available. Start and activate a terminal window. What text appears in the terminal windows? Take a screenshot of the desktop of your Linux computer with the terminal window running.
5. Exit the terminal window. Log off the Linux computer.
6. Log on the Linux computer in the graphical environment with the login name of jack and the password akrtu33. Were you successful in logging on to the system? Why or why not? Note and error message that appears.
Task 2 Exploring Unix and Linux
In this activity you explore the uses of Unix/Linux operating system through browsing the Internet. You will do the hands-on about a) identifying career opportunities requiring Unix/Linux, b) identifying uses for Unix/Linux systems, c) identifying different versions of Unix, and d) differentiating between Unix, Linux, and DOS commands.
