Question: Using technology in the classroom can greatly enhance the learning environment if well-planned and implemented purposefully. Technology is also beneficial for different learning styles as it helps connect learning in meaningful ways and allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in multiple manners.
Allocate at least 2 hours in an inclusive K-12 classroom that includes students with disabilities for this field experience.
Observe and assist during your mentor teacher's instructional planning time. Help your mentor teacher develop at least one instructional activity that involves the use of technology in the inclusive classroom. Be sure to pay close attention to the planning process.
After the specific activity is planned, discuss how the activity would be transferred to the "Multiple Means of Representation, Multiple Means of Engagement, and Multiple Means of Expression" sections of the "COE Lesson Plan Template." Be sure to consider appropriate differentiation for the students in the class.
Following the planning session, discuss the planning process, technology, and differentiation with your mentor teacher. Use the following questions for guidance and clarification:
What different types of technology do you use in your classroom?
How do you use technology to differentiate learning for students?
How do you feel using technology benefits your students?
How do you feel using technology benefits you as a teacher?
Do you have any students who have assistive technology in their IEP? What are they and how are they used to support the student?
Is there any type of technology you wish you had available to you?
How do you collaborate with the special education teacher or any other professionals regarding technology/assistive technology?
Following the discussion, work with your mentor teacher to determine a time for you to implement the activity with the class or a small group of students for Clinical Field Experience C in Topic 4.
Spend any remaining field experience hours observing or assisting the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Respond with 300 words at least reflection summarizing the planning and differentiation process as well as the discussion with your mentor teacher about technology and how it is used to differentiate instruction. Explain how planning with differentiation supports teachers in meeting the needs of all students. Discuss the use of technology in the classroom to differentiate learning for students, including the benefits for student and teacher and any collaboration that occurs regarding technology.
