This week we are in Chapter 8, "The Governor and Executive Branch." The Governor is part of the Executive branch and something unique in Texas is that the Governor also shares power with other elected offices in the Executive branch, such as the Lieutenant Governor and the Attorney General. We call this the Plural Executive.
On paper, the governor of Texas is "weak" compared to other states but there are other factors that influence a governor's power. In particular, Texas is dominated by one party, the Republican party, and that makes it much easier for the current governor to push his own legislative priorities as well as appoint agency heads in line with his agenda.
