Problem
I. Write an introductory paragraph indicating the title of the play or musical, the name of the playwright and the director's name. If it's a musical you must indicate the composer's name, the lyricist's name and the book writer's name. Also mention what type of a production it is, i.e., play, musical, theatrical event, etc., and where you saw it (the name of the theater or the performance space). What type of performance space is it? If the play is produced by a theatre company, such as Playwrights Horizons or Signature Theatre, mention the name of the company as well. Remember that the title of the play or musical is written in italics.
II. In the second paragraph you should discuss the theme of the play. Make a thematic statement in one complete sentence and then take the rest of that paragraph to elaborate and discuss how that theme is evident throughout the play.
III. Then you can go on to discuss the actors' performances. How do you think they did transforming themselves into those characters? How did they use their bodies and voices to portray the characters? Did you believe they were really those characters? Were the characterizations effective? Were you moved by the actors' performances?
IV. You can discuss the theatrical spectacle: the sets, the costumes and the theatrical lighting. What about the sound effects such as a phone ringing, a train passing by, a dog barking (that you don't see but is assumed that the dog is offstage somewhere)? Sometimes there's recorded music during scenes and in between scenes to make smooth transitions in between the scenes. Do you think that was effective in the production?
V. Finally, you should writ e a concluding paragraph. You can wrap it up and make some overall statements about the production. Remember that it's ok to have your opinion but then you must back it up with evidence. If you think the play is "good" or "fantastic" discuss why. What elements of the production made it good or bad. And try to stay away from judgmental words such as "good" or "bad". Say something was "effective" or "ineffective" and why. You can use the words "strong" or "weak" or "powerful" to describe the play or the actors' performances or any other element of the production.
