How do you think the point of view affects the story

I personally have a hard time deciphering third person limited and omniscient. The word 'they' is a good term to look for when attempting to read a story. I like using the term eavesdropper when I think about limited. I say this because when you are standing behind the main individual we know, there is someone behind that person listening in on everything. So you would think it is first person, but in all reality, we have stepped back behind our lead.

How do you think the point of view affects the story? Does it change what the reader knows and does not know? Why do we select certain point of view for a story?
