Minute Paper Assignment : Plastics Pollution
Topic: Guest Lecture by Ms. Amanda Waddle, Plastic Pollution, Zero Waste & You, and Ms. Amanda Brinton, Comparative Study of Rwandan and Haitian Plastic Bag Bans. This represents a double-minute paper assignment opportunity. You may do one or both of these papers. Please submit as one file but use the appropriate headers, spacing and margins, etc. Note you have two extra days to complete this assignment.
Minute # 4: Ms. Waddle discussed her personal journey to becoming involved in advocacy related to reducing and eliminating single-use plastic waste. She discussed the types of plastics in the ocean, sources of those plastics, and the consequences. Please discuss the following in your minute paper (1 page):
Waddle discussed the difference between a linear economy and a circular economy. Please briefly describe each, indicating which economy characterizes our current system and indicate which one is necessary to move toward a zero waste society.
Waddle discussed the 3-Rs as they relate to Zero Waste, what are each of the 3 Rs and please provide an example of each.
Two of these Rs are considered the primary defense against continued pollution of the environment with plastics. Please use the Zero Waste Hierarchy 7.0 slide to help you identify which two traditional Rs are most important and why? What is the 4th R of the hierarchy and how does it relate to a circular economy?
Minute #5: Ms. Brinton used the case studies associated with Haiti and Rwanda to discuss the implementation and enforcement of plastic bag bans in these two countries. Additionally, we discussed the use of strict enforcement and people-centered enforcement as it relates to e-waste prior to her arrival (for more information beyond the slides see Chapter 4, Governance for Conservation Risks and Crime by Axelrod et al. in your text). Please discuss the following in your minute paper (1 page):
Brinton contented that a knowledge of history was important to understanding contemporary situations such as pollution, governance, and enforcement in previously colonized countries such as Haiti and Rwanda. Give one example of how history is relevant for each countries solid waste management.
Further, Ms. Brinton discussed the impetuous or motivation for enacting plastic bag bans in each country. What were they and how did they differ? How do you think the motivation for the plastic bag bans in these two countries led to differing of enforcement?
Lastly, these case studies provide an illustration of strict versus people-centered enforcement of environmental regulations. Please detail which country used the strict enforcement model and top-down implementation of their plastic-bag ban and which country used people-centered approaches.
