How do you think the 'sex symbol' part of nursing started? When I think back to Florence Nightingale and the long white gowns and white hat, they certainly were not out to seek attention or attraction. A book was published by those trying to change the way media portrays nurses called Saving Lives: Why the Media's Portrayal of Nursing Puts Us All at Risk. In the book, the authors explain how the images of nurses are affecting real-life decisions about nursing and the way nurses are treated. Some may steer away from making a career decision in nursing because of the way nurses are portrayed in media and they do not want to be a part of it.
