The following questions and exercises are designed to help you apply ethical principles and standards to research situations involving IRBs and prospective research participants.
Case Scenario 1: Sunny runs a psychoeducational group for parents of children with developmental delays. She is also responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of this program. Sunny cooks supper for the group's final session, hoping that her efforts will make clients feel good when they are completing their evaluation forms. What are the potential benefits of having Sunny act as both a social work practitioner and a researcher? What are the risk of having Sunny act as both a practitioner and a researcher? Which standards from the NASW Code, if any has Sunny violated?
Case Scenario 2: Agency Politics: Trauma, Inc is a private agency that provides critical incident stress management services to schools and other organizations that have experienced shootings or other traumatic events. Manny, the managing director hires Ethel, an evaluator, to study the effectiveness of the program. When Ethel ask whether their interventions are evidence-based, Manny says he is not sure what that means. Manny tells Ethel that he will let her know which clients she can speak with, to avoid exposing any their higher risk clients to Ethel's evaluation. Manny also proposes the use of a stress evaluation that he thinks will lead to positive findings for the agency and allow it to continue to receive contract with school boards and other large organization.
