Note to students: Filipino Student
This unit requires you to show evidence of your ability to reflect upon your own perspectives on diversity, identify areas of your own life that have been impacted by diversity and identify the impact of your own culture on co-workers and on other people. You must use reflection to support inclusive work practices, work with awareness of own limitations and social awareness as you identify and value diversity in the workplace and implement cultural safe practices.
In your responses, do not use names, as clients, their families, friends and other staff must always be de-identified.
Part A: Reflect on Your Own Culture- Filipino background
Reflect on your own attitudes, beliefs and perceptions of cultural diversity in the workplace. Remember that cultural sensitivity and competence are shown in how you speak and interact with others and how you write about different cultures and your opinions and perspectives.
Discuss your cultural/social background and that of your family. Filipino background.
- What language, policies/structures and customs are relevant to your own culture?
- How do you think your own background impacts people from backgrounds/cultures different to your own?
How do your cultural beliefs, values and experiences affect the following? Filipino background.

- Consider what you have learned during this unit of competency. What cultural biases or assumptions did you have before undertaking this unit?
Part B: Reflect on Your Cultural Competence in the Workplace - Filipino background
Reflect on your cultural diversity in your workplace. Remember that cultural sensitivity and competence are shown in how you speak and interact with others and how you write about different cultures and your opinions and perspectives.
- Provide detail about your workplace (or the service you are doing your placement at). How diverse is this workplace in terms of staff and client base? Consider race, gender, sexual identity, religious and spiritual beliefs and other areas that define diversity in your response.
- How does your own cultural background affect your communication style and delivery in the workplace?
- How do you show that you value and respect people from different cultures and backgrounds to your own in your day-to-day work activities? Provide three examples.
- What practices make your workplace culturally competent and safe? Give three examples.
- How do you contribute to and encourage a culturally safe work environment?
- What is the impact of your culture on your colleagues?
- What is the impact of your culture on the clients and families that use your service?
- Name one limitation or barrier you feel when working with people from backgrounds or cultures different from your own.
- What do you think you can do to remove the barrier or address the limitation?
Part C: Responding to Diverse People Filipino Student
Reflect on two different situations when you recognised and responded to misunderstandings between people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. The misunderstanding can be either between the clients directly in your care, between staff or between clients and family members of clients. Remember that cultural sensitivity and competence are shown in how you speak and interact with others and how you write about different cultures and your opinions and perspectives.
