Exercise 1: Department Quality Control and Policy Oversight
Part A:
A member of your team provided you with the "Jan 2015 budget comparison with errors for Simulation.xls" document. As the person responsible for overall quality of the data provided to the CFO and Senior Director of Finance, you begin a cursory review of the data and you notice a mistake. Clearly, you're going to have to carefully proof the document.
List the errors (numerical/typographical) you find below AND correct them within the spreadsheet itself.
Error list:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
<add if you find more>
Part B:
You had to make the corrections yourself because the deadline to provide the documents to the Senior Director of Finance is tomorrow, but clearly the # of errors are not acceptable. How do you solve this challenge in the long run to ensure it does not happen again? Please limit your answer here to no more than 5 bullet points, we want the main ideas, not an essay.
Part C:
You are preparing to consolidate the ABC'sbudget, but you need one of the senior staff members or "budget owner" to provide the final update on her travel expense line for her team. She shared with you that there is a new initiative that would require new positions and her team to travel more than previous years.
You have shared your rapidly approaching deadline with the budget owner, but you still do not have the information needed to make the final update to the budget. Please write a 250 word or less email requesting the missing information and reiterate your point about the importance of complying with the timeline set by the Finance Department.
Exercise 2: Financial Analysis and Written Presentation
For the purposes of this simulation, you have already created the attached "2016 Proposed Budget Simulation Version" file (for the ABC Education Fund c(3) and ABC org c(4)). The attached spreadsheet holds the budget you and your team has produced. This information will be shared with a 5-senior member leadership team in advance of the January Board meeting. The team includes the Executive Director, COO, Director of Fundraising, Director of Campaigns and the CFO.
However, you know from experience that the members of the team may not have the time to look really carefully at the data, and your task is to create a digestible narrative that the team members can look at in advance of the meeting that highlights key takeaways and important items.
This narrative can take any form; it's really about what you think is practicable and best for communicating the information to a management team with finance and non-finance background members. You could choose to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, spreadsheet annotations, animated cartoons - we leave it up to you to choose.
