Assignment:

Watch Point Break (watch wherever you can find it!); then, watch the guest lecture on the film by Kacy Boccumini. After doing so, answer the following questions:

In the article on "Hegemonic Masculinity," Morettini writes

"The cogency of the theory of hegemonic masculinity resides in its conception of man. The domination takes place not only between genders but even within them. The problem is, therefore, not man per se, but certain types of behavior associated with dominance and power. Men face gender-related problems, just like women."

1. How do you see hegemonic masculinity at work in Point Break, particularly as it plays out between men?

2. Do you think hegemonic masculinity is the same thing as "toxic" masculinity? In other words, are there things about hegemonic masculinity that are positive or redeemable? If so, what are they? If not, why?

3. Reflect on your experience watching Point Break, and then viewing this lecture. What did you think of the film? What was your biggest takeaway from the lecture?
