Assignment: Childcare in Urban Areas Presentation
1. Respond to my feedback comments on the initial pitch. If significant changes are indicated, please act upon the comments and modify the theme and topic accordingly. Either way, please respond to the comments and explain how you are proceeding forward.
2. Define and discuss your research question. This segment should run to around two pages. This is the point at which you are giving me not just a topic, but a research question which should address the following (organize by paragraphs, one for each subsection a, b, c):
a. What is the question your project seeks to answer? This is obviously much more specific than simply identifying a topic. You may for example be evaluating the success or failure of a specific piece of infrastructure, a public service initiative, standing policy, a prevailing condition, or remedying a gap in essential services/facilities.
b. How do you propose to analyze and/or evaluate it for the following criteria: effectiveness, efficiency, equity, consistency, utility and relevance? These are standard grounds for evaluating public policy and its outputs, whether in the form of services, organization or facilities.
c. Indicate likely political and cultural influences on the policy including how likely it is to succeed/whether or not it has succeeded, and whether or not these considerations influence its viability. You may also wish and/or need to review physical constraints/assets affecting your chosen focus of study's prospects of success or failure.
3. Indicate and briefly describe the case selections for your paper. These will likely be the various cities you are studying or the specific neighborhoods or facilities you are studying.
4. Complete a literature review summarizing the state of academic literature and specialist opinion on your research topic; and some treatment of general omissions in the literature and/or the ways in which the literature does or does not effectively apply to the case(s) you are analyzing. You're strongly advised to have around 20 scholarly sources by this point from which to work.
5. Define a best practice for the policy you are studying. Note that at this point you do not need other elements that will be required with the final the paper, such as the detailed case write-ups, any needed data analysis and conclusion.
