Case Study: You have just been transferred to CDA Hospital Limited to assume the position of Department Head for the Radiography Department. You are very excited about your promotion as you have many ideas which were gleaned from the Managers Who Lead seminar you attended recently. At the interview, you were given a briefing on the department by the Human Resource Manager, Vanessa Willie. It was Mrs. Willie's understanding that the twenty women and five men employed in the department were all lazy, recalcitrant and indisciplined. They showed no respect to the previous Department Head, who they felt did not know what she was doing. The group constantly complained about the lack of resources and the less than perfect work environment, and would not work unless the Department Head was present.
You arrive early on the first day of assuming duties to find the department in a filthy condition. Quite a few bulbs are blown, dust and cobwebs cover supplies and the floor is covered with a liquid substance. There is no particular order to arranging the filing cabinets. No one is present to give information for quite some time, as the employees drift in between 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. You call a meeting at 11:00 a.m. to introduce yourself and get to know something about the staff members. Based on the verbal expressions and the negative body language in response to several questions you ask, including if they liked the job and what they would like to see happening, you conclude that the staff members are severely demotivated.
Questions:
a) Identify factors that would lead you to conclude that the work climate in the department is unhealthy.
b) In your new capacity as Department Head, how do you propose to achieve a positive work climate, in light of the reports by the HR Manager and your own observations of low staff morale
c) What power base(s) would you need to exercise with these employees and why?
d) Which two emotional intelligence components would be most relevant for your effectiveness as a leader at the start of your tenure? Why?
