This is a course focused on purchasing, and the project requires us to find an issue that you’ve had with purchasing at some point in the course of running your business, and either apply your solution to a theory from class, or come up with our own solution if you didn’t find one.
I need to think of 2 or 3 questions to ask delivery company about purchasing except below questions.
Tell us a little bit about your business and what you do.
Can you describe your process for selecting suppliers? Do you employ negotiation, competitive bidding or reverse auctions?
What are some important terms or language that you might include in a contract with a supplier?
Are there some instances where you have a larger supplier pool to choose from and others where the pool is very small?
Do you use one or several suppliers for your purchases?
If one: How do you handle your supplier having an issue such as not being able to get your product on time, or the supplier raising their prices?
If several: How do you maintain a close relationship with your suppliers?
Do you use any international suppliers? Why or why not?
If international suppliers are used: Do you usually get the products on time? Is the quality comparable?
What is most important to you: price, quality, (on-time) delivery, responsiveness to changing needs (such as quantity), financial stability of the company?
Do you do any monitoring of your suppliers? This could include site visits or tracking performance.
How much of a focus do you place on ethical and sustainable sourcing? Do you include any language in your contracts about that, or work with suppliers to ensure that they are acting ethically and sustainably?
Are there any problems with purchasing or suppliers that come to mind?
Perhaps a supplier who consistently fails to deliver on time.
Maybe a supplier who has come under fire for legal or ethical issues.
Delivery company: Tommy built the company from nothing, but now it is now really successful.
Tommy does most of the day to day business, while his wife Tiffany does a lot of the accounting and office work.
