Christine de Pizan "The Book of the City of Ladies"
Remember, the thesis of your paper will connect the work's theme (the insight you gain from reading the primary text) to the cultural context of the work (the information you gain through research). Though the annotated bibliography and the final research paper require more sources, this paper proposal only needs three scholarly sources, not including the primary text you're using.
Include one of each of the following types of sources:
• a book (e-book or print, besides our textbook)
• a journal/periodical article from a database
• a reliable and credible website article/page
Content
Include the following points in your proposal:
• A brief introduction of your paper topic: What have you decided to read and research for your term project? What genre (story, poem, epic, non-fiction, etc.) does your chosen piece belong to? Why did you choose that for this research paper? What do (did) you know about the text at the pre-research stage?
• A few paragraphs addressing the primary text: While reading the primary work for your term paper, take notes on the genre (play, poem, etc.), theme, structure, language, etc.-anything that catches your eye. Consider whether it reminds you of another literary piece (and, if so, what piece and how is it reminiscent?), whether it seems totally foreign to anything you've read before, what stands out to you (the characters, the language, the action, the setting, etc.).
• Then transition to your discussion of your sources by explaining how you decided where to look for information about your piece. Include a brief summary of each preliminary source that you examined (even if you don't wind up using it in the paper), making a note of the following for each one:
o What kind of resource it is (encyclopedia, book or article about the work you are researching, or history about the time and place of the primary work or author, etc.)?
o How do you know it is credible and reliable?
o What information did you find about the authority of the author?
o Summarize some of the main ideas from the source. (NO DIRECT QUOTES or specific research here - just summarize in broad strokes.)
o What part of the cultural context for your primary work does this secondary resource
offer: information on the government, religion, society, art, education, etc. of the time?
• Finally, discuss some of the research challenges you expect. This area should show that you understand your topic and the material that is available on your topic.
• Don't forget to include the Works Cited page as the final page(s) of your proposal.
Format
with a Works Cited page. It should not have a title page - follow the
for each scholarly source you've identified. Refer to the posted MLA documentation resources posted in Canvas and on the Purdue OWL website.
You may use first person in this proposal. Though you may use pieces of this proposal for your final paper (where you would nix first person), your point here is to outline the direction of your research.
