This week we learned about the U.S. Constitution, and about the legal framework in which the police operates. Some police actions and decisions by the courts, although legal, can be highly controversial. As you know, the U.S. Supreme Court is composed by nine judges, and their votes, influenced by their believes and morals, determine whether some actions are legal or illegal, or whether some actions should or should not be protected under the U.S. Constitution.
As you probably know, the U.S. Supreme court recently overturned a case 'Roe v. Wade,' and now the right that women had to have an abortion is not protected under the Constitution anymore. Because of this ruling, each individual state has to legislate on this issue and determine if abortion can be legal, and under which conditions, or not.
With the ruling of 'Roe v. Wade,' the Supreme Court could limit other rights that Americans have, such as the right to marry a person of the same gender (Gay marriage) or the right to marry someone of a different race (interracial marriages).
Please answer the following questions?
Question 1: What do you think, and how do you feel about the fact that a group of five US Justices, who you have never met, have restricted a right that women had on something so intimate and personal such as getting an abortion?
Question 2: Should US Justices have the right to determine whether gay marriage and interracial marriage is not longer a right protected under the Constitution? Why or why not?
If judges can decide who you can't marry, how would you feel if you were not allowed to marry/date the person you love? Would that "legal decision" be authoritarian and an abuse of power?
