Part 1 - Respond to the following, and support your work with at least one current (not more than 3 years old) article from a trade or professional magazine or journal:
- What comes to mind when you hear "employee relations?"
- How do you define employee relations?
- How do an organization's mission, vision, values, and culture influence its relationship with employees?
Part 2 - Respond to the following:
- the three major areas of HR's responsibility: Transactional work, tactical work, and strategic work. In which area do you think employee relations best fits? In your experience, is this the role employee relations fulfills? Which elements of the organization's culture have the greatest impact in shaping that role?
- Why do you think that is its "default" role?
Part 3 -Select two of the internal human resources customer groups from the media piece Types of Internal Human Resources Customers (attached), and answer the following questions:
- What are some of the specific employee relations issues a member of this group might bring to HR?
- How would HR "the tactician" respond?
- How would HR "the strategic employee relations partner" respond?
Part 4 - Select one of the issues from Part 3, and post your thoughts about your comfort level with the difficult conversation you would need to have.
Part 5 - How do the different HR roles (tactician and strategic partner) influence employee engagement? What has contributed to your willingness to engage with your work in the past? How engaged are you at your present job? How could employee relations support you?
