QUESTION 5)Since I have become a nurse manager, it has been one of my goals to build a culture where nurses are safe to speak up, weather it involves a patient care issue, a mistake that as made, a process that is not working, etc.  This type of culture brings psychological safety to my unit and nurses take pride and ownership of their own professionalism.  Nurses are empowered and supported to make an ethical stand and feel job satisfaction when they see the goods of their efforts.

Hi Class,

What are you describing reminds me of the concept of "just culture." In this type of culture, health care workers are not reprimanded when reporting errors. The entire system is reviewed when an error is made in order to find out the causes for the error. Do you feel you practice just culture?

QUESTION 6)I think as  a nurse we need to leave at home whatever that could hinder the way we care for our patient, they come first and  if any nurse does not see it that way, they need a check on self as to  what profession they really want to be in.

QUESTION 7) So, although I value the ethical principle of autonomy for others, I also think that there has to be balance. In these types of situations, can mental health patients be "forced" to take their medications?

QUESTION 8)I see that you mentioned personal experiences.  Sometimes we don't like to admit that we allow our past experiences affect our professional decisions but we do allow them to dictate our personal decisions.  I admire your honesty in this area.  I think it is important that you acknowledge that and shows an area of insight that you can use to help guide other nurses in how to distinguish how to balance our professional ethics with personal experience during decision making.  I think we sometimes think that using personal experience will not positively impact decisions because of prejudice and bias but being aware of this can be useful.  Do you agree?  Is there a delicate balance or a fine margin as you mention?  I am glad that we have a professional code of ethics to help guide us in the process.  I can think of a time when my personal beliefs didn't line up with the "code" at the correctional facility and even challenged the nursing code of ethics.  It was difficult at times to make decisions in that environment. Hence, I no longer work there. Do you feel that you ever compromise your religious beliefs by following your professional code? I find the ANA Code of Ethics very useful.
