Assignment:

This paper is a analysis of the book, Eleven Nations. You'll find this book gets into a number of important and powerful issues that resonate with many contemporary events.

This paper should demonstrate a knowledge of the book as a whole by referring to different parts of it to support your essay. The task is very straightforward. Develop a question of your own that requires a critical analysis to answer. Don't summarize the book. Choose a particular aspect--something you find important, interesting or significant. Your paper then responds to that aspect.

Examples of good ideas for a paper:

  • How do Woodard's regions influence the course of US history?
  • What regions have been most powerful and why?
  • Where is Woodard wrong about American history?

If you can't come up with something of your own you can base your essay on the above or similar questions. The best papers will be those that have original ideas and prove those ideas well.

You need to focus on your thoughts- your analysis using specific information from the book to make your points. Once you have developed a question about the book that you feel good about, craft analytical paragraphs. Be critical. Don't take the book's ideas for face value. Sometimes authors have great evidence and sometimes they don't. Think about what you read and reach your own views. Be sure you are telling your reader what you think and what you conclude about this book and why.
