Assignment:

How do John Smith's and William Bradford's perceptions of the New World compare? The information in the Norton introduction provides an excellent discussion of the historical, social, and cultural context for both writers. Smith's reliability as a narrator has been questioned for its truthfulness (he might embellish some of the facts), but his descriptions became the standard for the new territory. He is credited with labeling northeastern America "New England." Bradford is noted for his "plain" style that he believed imitated the simple yet profound writing in the Bible. What similarities do you notice in Smith's and Bradford's visions of what will become America?
