Question: How do we know that Joe's alcohol issue has to do with his family? It seems as if his family's issues all stem from Joe's drinking. This writer could be wrong, since we did not yet get any background about the family dynamic. However, this writer does agree with the systemic approach and understanding how each person in Joe's family contributes with their actions and how those actions contribute to Joe's excessive drinking. As the therapist, we are not quite sure yet what the negative actions are from Joe's wife or daughter. This writer also agrees with you Tanya about Al-Anon for the family. Al-anon can help Joe's wife and family members cope with Joe's drinking. There will be other people going through exactly what they are experiencing. They can learn how to cope and handle what is happening in their family unit (Shandrow, 2023). By providing psychoeducation to Joe's family, this writer would be hopeful that they can come to a better understanding of Joe's behaviors and learn that it is a disease. By coming to an understanding of this, Joe's family could hopefully be willing to join in on his journey to getting better.
