Question: Both Hesiod and Aeschylus provide insight into the nature of Zeus's reign by giving a central role to human women, Pandora in Hesiod, and Io in Aeschylus. However, the two authors depict the reign of Zeus in fundamentally different ways. Hesiod offers us a myth explaining why life for humans, specifically for men, is the way it is. Aeschylus, on the other hand, offers a vision of a time in the past when Zeus was a new ruler and still evolving.
Compare how Pandora and Io play key roles in defining the reign of Zeus in Hesiod's and Aeschylus's accounts of the myth of Prometheus. How do these two heroines help us to see what type of ruler Zeus is in these two different depictions of what it means to live in a Zeus-ruled universe?
