Patient satisfaction is a significant part of quality and quality reporting. Stakeholders include organizations, consumers, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The challenge is how to we measure patient satisfaction. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has done this for us with publicly reported HCAHPS and CAHPS scores. CMS started these standardized measures with hospital settings - then moved onto skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, and hospice agencies. There are many external organizations contracted to collect these standardized data for submission to Medicare; Press Ganey is one of them.
"The HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients' perspective" (CMS, 2021, para 1). All providers ask their patients the same questions. Responses, since they are standardized, can then be compared to see who is doing well and who needs improvement.
