Gender Roles and Sexism - Dunn

Group Discussion

Using the chart of Feminine and Masculine traits (Gender traits file in Module) as reference, build on your knowledge from the Lecture and Language article to respond all of the following questions.

  1. What are three things that you can analyze from the lists when you look at them as a comparison? How do they compare to one another and what kind of big picture do they create?
  2. What is a potential problem with society expecting these traits from an individual based on their sex?
  3. In a broader scope, how do these lists perpetuate a patriarchal* system? That is, why are these standards inherently sexist?
  4. How do you think gender assumptions have affected the course and study of American history?

Pertinent Definitions:

*Patriarchy: control by men of a disproportionately large share of power.

Sexist: suggesting that the members of one sex are less able, intelligent, etc. than the members of the other sex, or referring to that sex's bodies, behaviour, or feelings in a negative way.

For this Assignment:

  • Clearly identify the question you're addressing.
  • Cite both of this week's lecture and article at least once. example: (lecture, pg. 4) (Language, pg. 5)
  • Use direct quotes sparingly, if at all, and rely on your own thoughts more.
  • Note how and when to cite sources from the video below
  • Respond thoroughly to the question (aim for at least 2-4 paragraphs on each question)
  • Use evidence for your statements. While personal stories can be helpful, don't let them distract you from the facts/questions.
