Assignment:
1. Select a passage of scripture from the Old or New Testament. You may choose a few verses or a whole story in the Bible. Ideally, you will select a passage that resonates with you either because you find it encouraging, challenging, or insightful. You may not choose a passage that has previously been covered in this class or used in a BibleProject video.
If you're not sure where to start, explore some of the videos on the BibleProject website to get an idea of a passage that is interesting to you, or go back to a previous passage in this class and read some of the verses before or after your assigned reading. You can also visit Bible Gateway to view the top 25 most frequently searched biblical passages.
2. Using the BibleProject's visual commentaries as an example, highlight and make notes on the chosen passage of scripture.
- Using Google Docs or MS Word, use the comment feature to take notes. Use highlighting of text feature to call attention to important words or phrases. If you choose to do this by hand, you will need to scan or take a picture of the hard copy and submit as a digital copy.
- For example, highlight the words or phrases that jump out at you, make note of the sections you have questions about, underline phrases of scripture that you find inspiring, and look up more difficult phrases in a study Bible. You might also find this blog helpful in generating ideas for how to take notes on the Bible. You don't need to do all of the steps she recommends, but it might help get you started.
3. Answer the following two questions in a paragraph for each question:
- What insights have you gained from reading your chosen passage of scripture?
- How do these insights relate to the Christian Gospel?
For my signature project, I have chosen Psalm 139:1-14. This passage reads:
- You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
- You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
- You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
- Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
- You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.
- Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
- Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
- If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
- If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
- Even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
- If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"
- Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
- For you created my inmost being you knit me together in my mother's womb.
- I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.
I chose Psalm 139:1-14 for my signature project because it depicts God's intimate and all-encompassing presence in our lives in a way that speaks to me deeply. The passages express a profound, personal relationship between God and the individual, highlighting God's total understanding of us, which is beyond human comprehension. The idea that God knows our thoughts, deeds, and activities with such accuracy and care is extremely comforting, especially in times of uncertainty or self-doubt.
The thought that there is no location where God is not present reassures me that I will always have divine companionship and guidance, no matter where life takes me. Furthermore, the passage's emphasis on being "fearfully and wonderfully made" reminds me of the intrinsic value and purpose that God has instilled in each of us, including myself. This recognition of our inherent worth and the divine care that went into our creation enables us to appreciate our own identities more deeply, as well as to feel grateful and purposeful. Overall, Psalm 139:1-14 challenges and inspires me to live in greater awareness of God's presence, as well as to accept my life's unique and meaningful design.
