Question: Consider the experiences and perspectives of Sherman Alexie in "Superman and Me" and of Malcolm X in "Learning to Read" on the journey to literacy. How did these authors awaken to the power of reading in their lives? Summarize and compare their ideas in no more than one paragraph*. Then, answer the question: How do their experiences and ideas relate to your own ideas and experiences of learning to read and becoming literate?
For your first essay, you will respond to ONE of the below two prompt choices; each prompt asks you to consider problems and controversies associated with education. You will be asked to consider two of the essays we have read in this class so far, to compare the authors' experiences and ideas, and to enter the conversation and discuss your own experiences with education. **It is important that you read each prompt carefully before you select the one that speaks to you; make sure you understand what is being asked of you in the prompt. If the prompt asks you to consider both Alexie and Rose's experiences, in addition to discussing your own experiences, make sure you don't only summarize Rose's story - that would not be answering the whole prompt question (you would be leaving out Alexie's experiences and your part of the conversation).
Requirements: Your essay should be a minimum of 3 full pages, and incorporate quotes, paraphrases, and/or summaries from the two different texts. Although the essay does not require outside sources or research, it does require a Works Cited page that lists full citations for the two texts that you will engage with for your chosen prompt. To create the Works Cited page for this assignment, use only the info provided to you on the text that you were given. For example, if you quote Alexie's text, use the Los Angeles Times info provided at the top of Alexie's essay to create the full citation. Use the MLA Guidelines document to create your Works Cited page. Alternatively, you may use an online citation generator like EasyBib.
