Metal plates having a total exposed area of 1 m2 are fastened together with rivets having a total exposed area of 100 cm2. The environment contains moisture, and possibly some salt. Consider two cases:

(1) steel plates with copper rivets, and

(2) copper plates with steel rivets.

(a) For each case, which metal will corrode?

(b) How do the rates of corrosion compare for the two cases?

(c) If twice as many rivets are used, what influence would this have on the total rate of corrosion?
